Aquilegia Vulgaris is another nice easy perennial to have in your garden, one of the early perrenials that appear in the year, late Spring and early Summer. Usually blue in colour, but can also be found in mauve, pink and white.
Sow Aquilegia's in March - April or August - September directly into the ground that they are to be planted or sown into pots and grown on.
Once the flowers have finished it is advisable to remove the flower heads as the seeding can be quite prolific, they will be everywhere quite quickly. If this is what you want then let them seed. I usually do as that way I have lots of them around the garden and lots of early colour that fills the gap after the Spring bulbs have past over, before the bulk of the summer perennials start to flower.
At the end of the season cut the flower spike to the ground and remove any dead of dying leaves from the plant. In the spring the new leaves will appear at the base of the plant, any old leaves from last year will have died and will just be dead wood on the side, remove and the plant is ready for the summer.
